Starting January 21, 2025, the night skies will host a rare and dazzling event – a planetary parade featuring six planets: Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. This alignment will last approximately four weeks, giving stargazers ample time to enjoy the cosmic show.
What is a Planetary Parade?
A planetary parade occurs when multiple planets align in the sky, appearing close to one another from Earth's perspective. While it’s not a perfect straight line, the clustering of planets in a single area creates an extraordinary visual experience.
How to Watch
Naked-eye visibility:
You can spot Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn without any special equipment. Venus, the “Evening Star,” will shine brightest, followed by Jupiter. Mars and Saturn will be slightly dimmer but still visible.
Telescopic delights:
To catch a glimpse of the ice giants, Neptune and Uranus, you’ll need a telescope or binoculars. These planets appear as faint bluish or greenish dots.
Best time to view:
Head outside at 20:30 local time, shortly after sunset. Look towards the western horizon for Venus and gradually scan higher across the sky to locate the other planets.
Why is This Special?
Planetary alignments are not everyday occurrences. They remind us of the intricate choreography of our solar system and offer a unique opportunity for amateur astronomers and enthusiasts to connect with the cosmos.
