Fraudulent recruiters target individuals, predominantly aged 20 to 39, with promises of high-paying IT jobs overseas. Upon arrival, victims have their passports confiscated and are forced into operating illegal call centers. These centers engage in a variety of cybercrimes, including phishing scams, fake loan offers, and cryptocurrency frauds, targeting victims worldwide.
Scale of the Issue:
Reports reveal that from January 2022 to May 2024, approximately 29,466 Indians who traveled on visitor visas to Southeast Asia are currently untraceable. In response, the Indian government has established a high-level task force to investigate the matter, enhance immigration protocols, and spread awareness to prevent such incidents.
