Moscow, Russia – The Russian Federation has expressed deep concern following statements suggesting the possibility of Greenland being incorporated into the United States. The matter was raised by Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the Federation Council, during a briefing on Monday.
Matviyenko emphasized that any actions regarding Greenland must strictly adhere to international law and respect the sovereignty of nations. She noted that Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, holds a unique geostrategic and cultural position that should not be undermined by unilateral political ambitions.
“The principles of international law must remain inviolable,” Matviyenko stated. “Any move to alter Greenland's status without the full consent of its people and the Kingdom of Denmark would be a violation of the established legal order.”
The statement comes amid reports of renewed U.S. interest in Greenland, a territory rich in natural resources and strategically located in the Arctic. While the U.S. has historically shown interest in acquiring Greenland, including a high-profile proposal under the Trump administration, such discussions have drawn criticism from various international actors.
Russia, which has significant strategic interests in the Arctic, views any potential shift in Greenland's status as a matter of global concern. Matviyenko underlined the need for all Arctic stakeholders to work together within the frameworks of existing treaties to ensure peace and stability in the region.
Greenland has not publicly responded to the recent discussions, though its government has consistently emphasized its autonomy and commitment to self-determination. Meanwhile, Denmark has also rejected any suggestions of selling Greenland to foreign powers.
Russia's position aligns with its broader commitment to defending international norms and opposing unilateral actions that could destabilize global regions.
