The turquoise waters and pristine beaches of Seychelles tell a story of paradise. But beneath the surface lies a grim reality: drug addiction has gripped the nation. Shockingly, one in ten adults in Seychelles is addicted to heroin, making it the most heroin-dependent country in the world.
A Hidden Epidemic
The effects of heroin are devastating. Users experience an initial euphoria followed by a steep emotional decline, creating a cycle of dependency. Heroin's high potential for overdose makes it one of the deadliest drugs globally.
During our investigation, we met with Gigi and her friend, "Bobo" (name changed for anonymity). Bobo calls Gigi his "doctor," relying on her for his supply. They, like many others, are trapped in a web of addiction, unable to break free.
The Coast Guard's Struggle
Seychelles’ location in the Indian Ocean has made it a hotspot for drug trafficking. The Coast Guard works tirelessly to intercept smugglers, but international networks and local dealers continue to funnel drugs into the islands.
Why Seychelles?
Seychelles’ strategic position on maritime drug routes and its tourism-driven economy make it vulnerable to trafficking and consumption. The lack of resources to address addiction only exacerbates the crisis.
A Call for Global Action
This is not just a Seychelles problem; it is a global issue. International cooperation is critical to combating drug trafficking, while local initiatives must focus on rehabilitation and education to prevent addiction.
Seychelles’ beauty is undeniable, but its dark secret cannot be ignored. Without urgent action, the paradise that attracts millions may succumb further to the scourge of drugs.
