Syrian Socialist and Anti-Imperialist Parties Dissolved by New Regime Amid Escalating Repression

Damascus, Syria – February 6, 2025

In a sweeping crackdown on political dissent, the new regime that seized power in the Syrian Arab Republic last December has abolished several socialist, anti-imperialist, and secular parties, including the Syrian Communist Party, the Unified Syrian Communist Party, the Socialist Party of the Arab Resurgence, and the Socialist Unionist Party. The move marks a significant escalation in the regime’s efforts to consolidate authoritarian control, suppress opposition, and align Syria with the interests of foreign backers, particularly Turkey and NATO.

The dissolution of these parties was announced following an expanded meeting of armed group leaders on January 29, 2025, where the regime solidified its authoritarian grip by granting a single individual absolute executive and legislative powers. This decision, widely seen as a step towards entrenching a dictatorship subordinate to Turkish influence, has drawn sharp condemnation from opposition groups and international observers.

In a statement released by the Syrian Communist Party, the regime’s actions were denounced as a blatant attack on democratic freedoms and social rights. The statement accused the regime of being a puppet of colonialist forces, particularly NATO and Turkey, and highlighted the escalating repression faced by the Syrian people since the regime’s military takeover on December 8, 2024.

“The obscurantist junta has begun a crackdown on our people’s social rights,” the statement read. “Tens of thousands of workers have been laid off from state and public sector facilities, with many such facilities having been liquidated. Discrimination against citizens on the basis of belief and affiliation has been escalating, amidst continuing acts of kidnapping, assassination, burglary, looting, and extortion.”

The regime’s decision to dissolve the parties was accompanied by the confiscation of their property, the removal of democratically elected deputies, and a ban on reorganizing under any other name. The 2012 constitution, which guaranteed general social rights and did not recognize a ruling party, was also abolished, leaving Syria without a constitutional framework and subject to the arbitrary rule of the new regime.

The Syrian Communist Party, which has a history of over a century of struggle for social justice and national sovereignty, vowed to resist the oppressive measures. “We regard this decision as a mere first step to be followed by more repression against all true patriotic and democratic forces,” the statement declared. “The Syrian Communist Party will not submit to this oppressive decision. It will continue to fight for the rights of the masses and to regain the independence and sovereignty of its homeland.”

The party called for unity among all patriotic and democratic forces in Syria to confront what it described as “obscurantist tyranny and despotism.” It emphasized the urgent need to resist the regime’s efforts to transform Syria into a reactionary state serving the interests of foreign powers.

The international community has yet to respond formally to the regime’s latest actions, but human rights organizations have expressed concern over the escalating repression and the erosion of democratic freedoms in Syria. The dissolution of socialist and secular parties is seen as part of a broader strategy to eliminate opposition and consolidate power under a single authoritarian ruler.

As Syria enters a new phase of political turmoil, the Syrian Communist Party and other opposition groups remain defiant, pledging to continue their struggle for a free and sovereign homeland. “Together in the Struggle for a Free Homeland and a Happy People!” the statement concluded, echoing the party’s long-standing commitment to social justice and national liberation.
