5 Injured in Violent Attack at Golden Temple as Man Wields Iron Pipe
Amritsar, March 14, 2025: A peaceful day at the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine in Sikhism, turned chaotic when a man armed with an iron pipe attacked devotees and volunteers, injuring five people. The assault took place near the Guru Ram Das Langar Hall, a bustling community kitchen that serves thousands daily, sending shockwaves through the temple complex in Amritsar.
Police swiftly arrested the attacker and an accomplice after they were subdued by bystanders at the scene. Among the injured were two sewadars (volunteers) of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the body responsible for managing Sikh religious sites. One victim, seriously hurt in the attack, was rushed to the Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research for treatment, while the others sustained minor injuries.
According to authorities, the incident was premeditated. "The second accused allegedly conducted a recce along with the one who attacked devotees," a police officer told reporters, hinting at a planned assault. However, the motive remains under investigation, with no clear indication yet of whether it was a personal grievance, a random act of violence, or something more targeted.
The Golden Temple, a symbol of peace and resilience, has witnessed violence in the past, most notably during Operation Blue Star in 1984. However, officials have not linked this incident to any broader political or religious agenda at this stage. The SGPC has condemned the attack, calling for a thorough probe to ensure the safety of devotees.
Witnesses described a scene of panic as the attacker swung the iron pipe indiscriminately before being overpowered. “It happened so fast—people were running, shouting for help,” said a devotee who was present at the langar hall. The quick response from those nearby likely prevented further harm.
Police have restored calm to the area and increased security around the temple complex as a precaution. The investigation continues to uncover the reasons behind this shocking outburst of violence in a place revered for its sanctity and hospitality.
