CPI(M) Hails Supreme Court Verdict Against Tamil Nadu Governor’s Actions
April 8, 2025
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has welcomed the landmark judgment of the Supreme Court, which declared the Tamil Nadu Governor's refusal to give assent to ten legislations passed by the state assembly as "illegal and arbitrary." The court's decision mandates that the withheld bills will now become laws, setting a significant precedent for federal governance in India.
In a statement issued by the Polit Bureau, the CPI(M) emphasized the historic nature of the verdict. The party noted that the judgment underscores the constitutional obligation of Governors to act within the framework of the Constitution and respect the decisions of democratically elected state legislatures. The court further directed Governors to adhere to a defined timeline when dealing with bills passed by assemblies, thereby curbing delays deemed detrimental to legislative processes.
The CPI(M) highlighted the broader implications of the verdict, pointing out that similar instances of Governors withholding assent to bills have been reported in opposition-ruled states, including Kerala. The party criticized such actions as an assault on the principles of federalism and democracy.
The judgment, CPI(M) asserted, strengthens the struggle against authoritarian tendencies and fortifies the protection of state governments' rights. The party reaffirmed its commitment to opposing centralization of power and safeguarding constitutional values.
This development has garnered widespread attention, with political observers viewing it as a pivotal moment in redefining the balance of power between the Centre and states. The Supreme Court’s ruling is expected to influence governance and legislative functioning across the country.
