Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza Worsens Amid Aid Blockade
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached a critical point, described by the United Nations as the worst since the conflict erupted 18 months ago. Stephane Dujarric, Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, highlighted severe shortages of essential supplies, including medical resources, fuel, and water.
Israeli authorities have maintained a blockade on humanitarian aid for over six weeks, the longest since the start of the conflict. This has exacerbated the already dire conditions, with food stocks running out and bakeries shutting down due to a lack of flour and cooking oil. Hospitals, operating on dwindling resources, are unable to meet the growing medical needs.
The relentless military assaults and widespread displacement orders have left civilians trapped in unsafe areas. Approximately 70% of Gaza is now under displacement orders or deemed inaccessible for aid operations. The infrastructure, healthcare, and sanitation systems are on the brink of collapse.
Since October 2023, nearly 51,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have lost their lives, according to UN reports. The UN has condemned the ongoing blockade as a violation of international law and reminded Israel of its obligations under international humanitarian norms as an occupying power.
Efforts to resume aid deliveries have faced significant obstacles, with the international community calling for immediate humanitarian corridors to address the worsening crisis.
