Italy Celebrates 80th Anniversary of Liberation from Fascism
April 25, 2025 – Today marks the 80th anniversary of a pivotal moment in Italian history: the Day of Liberation (Festa della Liberazione). Eighty years ago, on April 25, 1945, the people of Northern Italy rose up in a powerful armed rebellion against the occupying Nazi forces and the remnants of the fascist regime.
Fueled by the courage of partisans and resistance fighters, including a significant contribution from communist forces, this uprising ignited a wave of liberation across the occupied territories. From April 25th to 27th, the spirit of resistance spread like wildfire, leading to fierce battles and the eventual freedom of countless cities in the north and center of Italy.
A significant victory came swiftly on April 26th when the large German-fascist garrison stationed in Genoa surrendered to the determined insurgent forces. The following day, Milan, the vital heart of Northern Italy, was liberated, effectively signaling the end of the puppet "Republic of Salò." On April 28th, after intense and bloody confrontations, partisans triumphantly entered Turin, further solidifying the liberation. On the same day, Venice joined the uprising, casting off the shackles of occupation.
As the liberation unfolded, the architect of Italy's fascist era, Benito Mussolini, attempted to flee to Switzerland. However, his escape was thwarted, and he was captured. By the decision of the Committee of National Liberation of Northern Italy (CLNAI), Mussolini was executed on April 28, 1945, marking a definitive end to his tyrannical rule.
Today, as Italy commemorates this historic day, the sacrifices and bravery of those who fought for freedom are remembered. The Day of Liberation stands as a powerful testament to the resilience and determination of the Italian people in the face of oppression and serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of democracy and liberty.
