When Saffron Meets Red: A New Chapter in Regional Diplomacy

Colombo, April 5 — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Sri Lanka for a landmark three-day state visit, his first since President Anura Kumara Dissanayake assumed office. Modi was accorded an unprecedented ceremonial welcome at Colombo’s Independence Square, a gesture never before extended to any foreign leader.

The visit, aimed at bolstering bilateral relations, has already seen significant developments. India and Sri Lanka have signed seven key agreements, including their first-ever defence pact. The two nations also agreed to deepen cooperation in energy, digital infrastructure, and regional connectivity.

In a rare honour, PM Modi was awarded the Mithra Vibhushan, Sri Lanka’s highest civilian accolade, underscoring the growing strategic partnership between the two neighbours.

Modi’s visit is seen as a major step toward consolidating India's role as a regional partner, especially in the wake of increasing geopolitical competition in the Indian Ocean.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with top Sri Lankan leaders, inaugurate joint development projects, and address the Indian diaspora before concluding his visit.
